It has been quite a while that reading has “clicked” for Horus, and I can’t help but feel incredibly proud, and just generally thrilled that he is such a voracious reader. When I discovered Horus and Treva curled up together, with big brother reading to little sister, I couldn’t resist snapping a shot of the sweetness. There are days that I sometimes think that if I won the lottery, he’d be off to boarding school in the blink of an eye, but for the most part, things are going really well, and he has been increasingly receptive to keeping our homeschooling routine.

I don’t think much has changed in terms of how we do it (“school” in the mornings, for about an hour or so), but what we do has shifted a little bit. I’m using a (fairly generic) math workbook, and he does a page a day of that, and then he does copywork, from a book called “A Child’s Copywork Reader” by Simply Charlotte Mason, because while his reading is excellent, his printing still needs some work. And then, he does a journal entry (usually just a sentence or two). In general, we’re working on the concept of “eating the frog”–that is, getting one’s work done quickly right away, so that we can relax without the stress of procrastination.

Horus and Treva are also doing music lessons–Horus on the violin, and Treva on the piano. They’re both really loving their lessons, which I’m so happy about.

Felix found my phone, and snapped the two photos of Horus and me, working together, above. xo

I work in the field of teaching children with “emotional” and “behavioral” disturbances who are in the foster care or group home system. The BEST, absolutely BEST part of my job is somebody walking into my classroom and seeing my kids creating with clay or sewing, or using music as part of their daily school life and the powers that be basically asking why these kids aren’t trying to gut others or themselves with anything can they can find, or why no one seems to be trying to escape using any means necessary! I remarked the other day to a colleague, about you and your family, that if our kids had what yours do, we would be out of a job (happily!). much love to you all!
