It was Felix’s birthday on the 8th of August. A few days before, I had a breakdown and instead of divorce or a lobotomy, I opted for a holiday! So we piled into the dilapidated truck, and drove to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, one of the most picturesque and lovely towns…in the world! (we think!).
*
We stayed at Salty Towers, the very best, most eccentric, most hilarious, comfortable and reasonably priced hotel on the planet. Salty Towers is stuffed with wonderful art and artifacts, a little bit grubby, and right up our alley. It reminds me kind of poignantly of our old house on North & Gottingen street in Halifax. It was nice to be there, and I couldn’t resist taking lots of photos of the eclectic interior.

In celebration of Felix turning two years old, we took a trip on the Jolly Breeze, a bonafide pirate ship (not really), and it was heaps of fun for the first hour, and then a little bit excruciating for the next four, mostly because Horus was especially committed to his role and continuously (obsessively) attempted to engage the other passengers and crew in swordplay. But we survived and made it off the ship without being forced to walk the plank.

We strolled along the main street, and then up to Kingsbrae gardens, which was stunningly gorgeous at this time of year. The weather was perfect, there weren’t any arguments, and in all honestly, even though we only stayed overnight, it was one of the best and truest holidays I’ve ever had. Magical, really. So nice in fact, that we all resolved to come back again next year, and to make it a family tradition.

When we got back home, we had another little party for Felix, because I had forgotten to bring the beeswax candles that I had painstakingly made for the grain-free cupcakes, and I was deeply (ridiculously) attached to using them (ridiculous). And that was lots of fun, too.
